Big news from the latest FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting! Starting in 2025, the bonus point for setting the fastest lap during a Grand Prix will be scrapped. This was one of several updates to the Sporting and Technical regulations discussed during Thursday's meeting, which was chaired by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
Key Changes for 2025:
Fastest Lap Bonus Point Removed: From the 2025 season, drivers will no longer be awarded a bonus point for setting the fastest lap in a race.
‘Young Driver’ Practice Requirement Increased: Teams will now be required to field a young driver in two free practice sessions per season, up from the current one.
2026 Regulation Overhaul:
The meeting also focused heavily on the 2026 season, where significant updates to the Technical and Sporting Regulations were discussed. Here are some of the highlights:
Reorganized Rulebook: The 2026 regulations will be split into thematic sections for better clarity and consistency.
Enhanced Aerodynamics: The changes will aim to boost car performance while keeping racing close and exciting.
Energy and Aerodynamics Management: The 2026 Sporting Regulations will regulate energy management of power units and the use of adjustable aerodynamics, including ‘straight-line mode’ for low drag and ‘cornering mode’ for high downforce.
Pre-season Testing: There will be three three-day pre-season tests to prepare teams for the new power units debuting in 2026.
Financial Regulations Adjusted: A simplified financial structure will reflect changes in exclusions, adjustment methodologies, and inflation, while keeping the overall cost cap level.
FIA President Ben Sulayem’s Remarks: “The regulation changes for Formula 1 in 2026 will ensure the sport remains financially robust and has greater road relevance, alongside the introduction of upgraded safety features that do not compromise exciting racing,” said Ben Sulayem after the meeting.
